I'll assume not all of you know what I'm talking about.
Early Feb 2016, the DC Comic Animation channel uploaded this video:
I was excited as FUCK. Look, it's Raven, Starfire, Beastboy, Starfire and - who the heck is him? doesn't matter - It's the Teen Titans! They are back!
So, now you can see the movie or whatever if you look for it. I won't post the direct torrent link but if you look for it you will easily find it.
So what's this about? It is good or bad? Well in this not so short review you can find out, let's begin.
Long story short, it's the 'ark' of Raven and Trigon. The demon plans his 'descend' to earth using Raven as the portal, you know, classic stuff. The story basically tells us how the Teen Titans are forged. It's not going to be exactly as the old TV show, but it basically covers the same basics. Honestly, the title is super misleading, don't expect an epic fight of the Teen Titans vs The Justice League because it simple won't happen. They exchange some fists and lasers here and there, but the plot has so little to do with that that I think the title is just a mistake or a 'bait'. A better title would be "Teen Titans, the origins" or something.
As this is a 'short movie', the plot has to go fast, but most of the time it goes way too fast. Character development is poorly managed in the Titans, specially Raven and Robin. It feels like the script is trying to go quickly to the main plot but tries to develop some personality in some of the characters but fails notoriously.
Anyway, the plot has some errr moments in which it gives some good answers or reasons for some character aspects, most importantly it tells us why Raven has a gem in her forehead. It also shows us very clearly how are the personalities of some members like Beastboy and Starfire. It's important to note that Starfire is not a teenager here, or at least is the older one. She is like the 'mother' of these Titans more than their 'leader'. So, if you like shippings, there's no RobxStar here because Star is more 'into' Nightwing without it being evident.
I think the plot is good, but not solid. If I have to give a score it would be something like 3/5.
PD: expect some 'adult' topics. There is a part in which they explain Raven's origin and well... you know how babies are made.
Holy shit. Looks like I've totally forgot to see some modern western animation 'cuz they have improved a lot. Fights animations are super well done, nice moves, good sound and good choreography, which is super important in fight scenes. The only thing I think this animations lacks, more importantly, in what I think they still need to improve to reach epic anime fight standards are more expressions are better angles. Anime, which have better fights in general than western animation, is stills miles ahead in emotions during battles and camera angles abuse.
Anyway, animation is still good, and animation is not only motion. For me it's design too so it has to be a 4/5.
The cast of characters is as big as it has to be. Not so big, not so small. I think that's a plus, putting too much of the DC universe in one plot can harm a script. I didn't like all of the personalities, looks like all of the DC traditional heroes like Flash, Wonderwoman and Superman have a personality that's built to be very different to Batman's personality. Which I think harm the ones like Superman. I don't see superman saying 'cheesy' lines as he does a couple of times in the film - I mean they are not cheesy but those lines seems off. Like trying to be fun but failing at it. Raven's personality is OK but her voice acting... I mean is not bad but it seem forced. Raven is emotion-less, supposedly, but that doesn't mean her voice has to be so flat. I don't know if it was the script or the voice acting but in a lot of moment her voice felt odd. Aside of that, I enjoyed Robin's conflict personality and Star's 'responsible adult' attitude she had. Beastboy is basically on point, and I would same actually awesome since he can throw adult jokes and be innapropiate, which is just what I would expect from him. Hard to give a 5/5 considering what I wrote but a good shiny 4/5 is deserved here.
The 'movie' is good. Is not going to stay in your memory for a long time but it give you a laugh and you will enjoy a good hour an a half.
A final rating would be 4/5, which is super good but not OMG I JUST WANT SO MUCH MORE.
I mean, I actually want more, but mostly because Raven is my favorite character in like fucking life or something.
